Bambuser post-patching dropped frames

February 24, 2009 by Rasmus, tagged bambuser, startup, technology and video

Today the Swedish video-tech startup Bambuser announced a really cool thing – frames dropped during broadcast are patched in a post-step, providing stutter-free on-demand/offline video. From the announcement:

In order to keep you as close to real-time as possible we drop a few frames here and there which often still allows you to get a good video - even in poor conditions. However, in areas with very poor network or when loosing the connection every now and then, this has compromised the flow and quality of the on-demand video.

The new beauty; We now store any dropped frame or audio that can’t get through while you’re live and give you the option to complete your video with this data immediately after your live broadcast. This allows us to keep latency at an absolute minimum while also providing you with a perfect video when watching on demand!

War declared on IE6

There’s currently alot of discussions and finally also action taken in order to have the lagging part of the world upgrade from the web browser Internet Explorer.

It all started with Finn.no who put up a warning banner for users accessing the site through an old version of IE. The buzz has grown into a wide discussion, visible in the all mighty Twitter, screenshots of followers on Flickr and of course in the blogosphere.

Now, a few of the largest swedish websites have followed (aftonbladet.se, IDG.se, …) and more to come (hitta.se, …).

I love this thing that’s happening for two reasons: 1. I still do some web and IE is always THE pain in the ass. 2. The awesomeness of the internet, the web, is clearly visible.

Reliable SMS services?

Sender Receiver

I had this conversation over SMS/Text today. Funny thing is something happened with the message as it traveled through the servers and routers: Another persons message, or part of it, was appended to my message and the timestamp of the message got seriously skewed up. The left image is from my phone, showing the date, time and original message (green). The image to the right hand side displays the message actually received on the other phone. Note how the date in the received message is many days back in time.

How can things like this happen? Luckily, the person who received this understood something was wrong with the message. But hey, what if I’ve sent something really important, like nuclear weapon launch cancellation codes and those got screwed up?

For you who do not understand Swedish; “ska du knulla eller virka?” means “are you going to fuck or crochet?”
